How Inclusion Drives True Innovation

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you read the word ‘old’? Do you imagine a person in their 50s? 70’s? Do you think someone of that age is still working? How about if I add in ambitious? Does that make you think twice about that person’s age and employment status? Well, perception certainly is not reality.

We all have biases of some sort and many of us catch ourselves before we say anything hurtful. But, the bias remains. Truly addressing negative perceptions takes time, mindfulness and… practice. I regularly speak on generational differences in the workforce, and how it is HELPFUL to have a diverse group of employees throughout an organization. Each individual, from the youngest intern to the 30+ year lifer, brings a wealth of insight, talents, and fresh perspectives to the table.

However, to be successful, each generation must be patient with the other, recognizing differences and finding common ground. Don’t assume someone doesn’t understand or doesn’t “get it,” can’t hear, isn’t tech-savvy, or too impatient. Things aren’t that simple, and people cannot be defined by just a word or two. It’s essential to appreciate others’ experiences and positively interact with colleagues of different ages, as well as those of different cultures and backgrounds. To grow their companies and move forward, managers must draw upon all employees’ skills and expertise, while involving staff at all levels to actively contribute and drive innovation.

Reach out if you don’t know where to start. Sider Road can help you lay the groundwork. Bias kills innovation; inclusion fuels it. Learn to involve, inspire, and include employees to grow revenue.
