Didya: The Deadly Workplace Word.
The word I USED TO say most often, is Didya. Didya start the project? Didya submit the invoice? Didya send the invoice? Didya talk to so-and-so? Maddening to have to follow up all the time. So, I halted and changed. As a result, fresh air, success and movement forward.
If you have to do most things yourself or constantly remind people to follow-up, change the channel; get new employees.
Finding employees who are on the same pace as you is critical. Dependability and consistency are the top words for top notch anyone 🙂
My habit of automatically starting a sentence with Didya is now D-O-N-E. Why? Because it signaled mistrust… if you have the need to ask, it’s because you simply aren’t sure that things are going according to plan. And, if you’re the person who’s always being asked, especially when you’re getting the work done, you probably feel resentment and should quit.
While business success certainly is a combination of skill, luck, and timing, surrounding yourself with employees who don’t need to be asked Didya and allow you to sleep at night is a solid step forward. And, it doesn’t come naturally. You need to learn to be a boss, learn to be a coach, and learn how to train your staff to build a positive, rewarding work culture. Allowing yourself to trust improves employee satisfaction and performance. And, making your team feel safe enough to take risks that will most likely push your business to the next level.
SPEAKING ABOUT TRUST…
I’m off to San Jose del Cabo this October to train and work with the dynamic group of real estate sales professionals at Engel and Volkers. The goal is to perfect that sales pitch to instill trust to clients, vendors, and colleagues. What core of commonality can be used to start the conversation…oohhhh and so much more. Excited to brush off my Spanish and hit the road!
AND, IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GRADUATE
Yup, I did it. After two years of nights, weekends, and anytime I could fit in writing, reading, and running those statistics, at 55, I earned my MBA with distinction. I can’t impress upon you enough — if you’re not sure which way to go, open yourself to new possibilities and challenges. Keep learning. It doesn’t matter if it takes six months or six years. Keep evolving to stay relevant.
The challenges of ageism are real. Since most of us will be living longer, most of us will be working longer. And, regardless of where you are in life, work should matter. It should be fulfilling and worthwhile, whether it’s part time or on an executive board. It’s never too late to build your skills and distinguish yourself. Jump start your career at 60; maybe, by then, you’ll really know what you want to be when you grow up.

FINALLY
I let my daughter drive for the first time. Instead of hitting the brakes, she hit the gas and we went through our neighbor’s shrubs and onto his front lawn, leaving skid marks behind. After the horror, fear, nervous laughter, and joy that we weren’t killed, we’ll never forget the moment or what we learned together. Fortunately, the incredibly mean neighbor didn’t notice, because it rained later that day!
Trust me, trust us.
